1536
Kings don’t kill their wives, right?
Tudor England.
A field in Essex.
Three women meet to swap gossip from London, news of a clash between King Henry VIII and his Queen, Anne Boleyn. But as the rumours spread, their own lives begin to mirror the royal chaos unfolding at court.
1536 is a fiercely funny, sharply written new play from Ava Pickett (Winner of the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize), directed by Lyndsey Turner (Chimerica). Following a sold-out run at the Almeida Theatre, it now transfers to the West End for a strictly limited season.
Brilliantly blending the historical and the modern, 1536 is a dark, quick-witted and unflinchingly relevant look at women, power and survival in a world where violence against them is sanctioned from the very top.
